United Hebrew in New Rochelle, a premier nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, assisted living and senior housing organization, recently celebrated the graduation of students from its innovative intergenerational gerontechnology programs. The “digital divide”, the gap between new technology and the possibility of using it, may be the greatest among seniors because many of them fear that they cannot learn how to use them, The very group that was able to spend their leisure time sending friends and family, shopping, and connect with other online communities often cannot do this. Older adults may however be less fear of computers for learning was adapted to their individual needs.

United Hebrew inhabitants began his computer classes in March this year in a program that was created in 2006 through a partnership of United Hebrew, Pace University Seidenberg School of computer science and information systems, Fordham University, The Westchester County Department of Senior programs and services, and Westchester Community College. Each graduate got an endorsement from representatives from Pace University and joy graduation cake and punch in the afternoon ceremony.

“We are so proud of these people to overcome their initial fears about technology,” says Linda Forman, Vice President for community relations. -Our graduates feel a greater connection to the world at large and have developed new friendships with their teachers from Pace University.

The resident graduates and their Pace University student teachers could express their feelings about the successful completion of the course that the microphone was passed around. Great pride in their achievements and the warm friendship that developed between the two generations was very clear.

Class next to United Hebrew inhabitants begin in the autumn, with student teachers enrolled in service-learning at Pace University. Residents of the United Hebrew nursing home, assisted living facility Willow Towers and older residences all have the opportunity to take classes in computer rooms in each building on the UH campus.

In today’s fast-paced, computerized society lifelong learning is important. Older adults learn to use computers can open up a new world of surfing the Internet for news and information, send email family and friends who are too far to visit, create and send cards, write to government officials on matters of interestand keeping with health and medical information. In addition to gain computer skills, take advantage of the new relationships formed with the students and Faculty of Pace University.

Last year United Hebrew for an addition to their computers from The Telikin company. Telikin has created a new computer with touch screen and a simple formatted screen. Two computers were donated to United Hebrew as part of their ongoing research to improve their product. One of the computers were given to United Hebrew resident, Pam Leichtweis.

“Telikin touch screen has changed my life. I can’t use my hands very well, but the touch screen is so easy to use. I cannot live without it, “said Pam Leichtweis.

“This program allows our citizens to interact with a team of students from has been already immediate ways to teach older adults,” says Linda Forman, degree is always a high point on our campus that gives such satisfaction in knowing they learned new and valuable computer skills.

Lazarus Gallery of United Hebrew in New Rochelle, a campus in housing and services for older adults, presents a new juried exhibition birds, bees and butterflies. The exhibition will display artwork that reflects these winged creatures that conjure visions of spring and pollination, with a wealth of vibrant colours. Birds, bees and butterflies, which features over 40 visual artists from around the United States, will be in the Gallery Lazarus new nursing home and rehabilitation Pavilion by 9 September 2011. The exhibit includes photography, mixed media, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, encaustic and fiber art.

“We are so excited to present such a beautiful exhibition of our nursing home and rehabilitation services for residents, family members, and visitors.” says Linda Forman, Vice President for community relations. Gallery Lazarus is a wonderful place for inspiration and lifelong learning.

The exhibit was assessed by Susan Hoeltzel, Director of the Lehman College Art Gallery. Emily Mello, curator for adult and academic programs for the Neuberger Museum of Art and Stomu Miyazaki and architect and Chairman of the Trustees and the Hammond Museum.
