Muscle imbalance explained
A muscle imbalance acts upon a joint
A muscle imbalance is always connected with an imbalance in the surrounding musculature of a joint. A constant state of misalignment will result in some muscles becoming shortened from extended periods of being in flexion, while the others become elongated from being constantly overstretched. When certain muscles are used more often, they get stronger and tighter, while the less used opposing muscles on the joint become weaker. The consequence is a muscle imbalance of the involved joint.
Sedentary lifestyles lead to muscle imbalances
Muscle imbalances that many people suffer are from living sedentary lifestyles, like working long hours seated hunched over a computer or watching TV. As we do this, the body adapts to this way of being, causing a person to have hunched over shoulders and protruding head that sticks out, just as they are doing at their computer. See the pattern? Another common muscle imbalance is the anterior pelvic tilt, or the deep arch in the lower back with a protruding abdomen that sticks out. This muscle imbalance also occurs from sitting too long because the muscles that are on the front of the hip become tight, while the muscles on the back become loose. The anterior pelvic tilt also causes lower back pain.
A muscle imbalance can be corrected with posture correction
A simple posture correction strengthen and stretching program can be used to resolve the muscle imbalance issue, results will vary depending on the nature of the muscle imbalance.
